During 35 years of martial arts practice and teaching self-defense classes for a variety
of people, I’ve learned a revealing truth: safety is in our hands. Sometimes people test our verbal or emotional boundaries. Sometimes familiar people or strangers intend to harm us. Either way, fear is their tool—but safety is in your hands.
Like CPR/First Aid training, we should periodically improve our skills to face verbal, emotional and physical confrontations. Ancient martial arts monks in Southern China concluded that even with “right living” a 10 percent chance existed that they would face unwanted challengers. Today, a violent crime (theft, assault, rape, homicide) occurs in the United States approximately every 25 seconds. Yet, we don’t have to journey through life in constant fear.
As a child, I survived a violent crime and witnessed two others. As an adult, I have defended myself from several verbal and emotional attacks, and three credible threats of physical violence. Personal Power: Modern Self-Defense classes help you avoid dangerous situations, and, if needed, give you the tools and confidence needed to defend yourself. AMAFA provides a safe and challenging place to practice. Classes are age appropriate and culturally relevant. We teach in a way that can hold and transform the trauma some have already experienced. This practice rewrote the story of my childhood trauma into one of strength. My hope is that everyone, like the ancient monks of Southern China, prepare for the challenges we are likely to face in life…then live in peace. Safety is in your hands.

Personal Power: Safety is in Your Hands
Ananda Martial Arts offers training in “Personal Power” that introduces the basics of Modern Self-Defense. Through practice and discussion, participants gain hands-on experience in successfully defending against verbal and physical attacks. No prior experience is needed. Techniques and discussions are appropriate for participants who are Children (10-14), Teens (15-18), Young Adults (19-24), and Mature Adults (25+). The class can be adapted for those with special physical or cultural needs.
